Ashley Custer’s very first job was working in a flower shop, Boyd’s in Wilmington, DE when she was 14. She worked there throughout all of high school and continued freelancing there and other Philadelphia florists on breaks in college. She attended Temple University majoring in Criminal Justice. After college, Ashley worked in a Title I school and then as a Foster Care Case Manager in Philadelphia. She passionately wanted to help improve people’s lives but felt disillusioned by the social systems set in place. When she moved to New York with her then girlfriend, now wife, Kristin Heckler, she returned to flowers to rejuvenate and reassess her career path. Working in NYC flower shops, Ashley was reminded of the joy and comfort flowers bring to people, including herself, and came up with the idea for a Flower Truck. NYC shops were already very small and the food truck model had exploded in the last ten years, even expanding to retail, but nobody in the city had started a flower truck. Finally, determined to bring light to people’s lives and make high quality flowers more affordable, she left her design job to open Uprooted Flower Truck in January 2015.
